Flooding from Tropical Storm Lee

If you all thought I was done with the rain yesterday, lets just say that today pushed my sanity. Okay, it not only pushed it...it broke it!

We lost power again last night and it stormed something fierce...ALL NIGHT. I woke up thinking I could handle the no power thing for a day. I mean we did just wrap up 73 hours with no power after Hurricane Irene, but then I heard a noise. A noise I have not heard before in my house. It was early, dark and I was still a bit groggy from the sleepless night. I followed the noise and found out it was coming from the basement.

I went down the stairs with my flashlight in hand and aimed it at the power box for our cable. Took a step down from the last step and SPLASH!!! I landed in water up to my ankles!!! Yes, I know that I should have been shining the light at the ground but I was more interested in finding out what was causing the noise. Come to find out...it wasn't the cable power box. It was the alarm saying that the battery back up on our sump pump had died. Really?! Cause I think the water I was standing in would let me know that. Don't you think it should have gone off before the basement started to fill with water?! Not after it was already over my ankles?!

Can you see the waves rippling in the back?!

Why oh why didn't I buy those pink Hunter Wellies in Nordstrom the other day?

Of course, Chris is out of town. (I won't even mention where he is but lets just say it is sunny, warm, there are palm trees and they upgraded him to a waterfront suite just because.) So, what's a girl to do? I called my mom and dad. They came up with a few ideas over the phone of what I could do but as all parents do...they recognized that I had not only crossed over the line of sanity into the area of insanity but that their grandchildren were with me, in the care of a crazy person. So, they activated emergency plan A and came over to help me get out from underneath the water.

These are my Dad's feet. I think he is looking for minnows swimming by.

These are my Mom's feet. She was pretending she was lakeside and went with flip flops instead of boots.

And truly...Thank God they came over to help me because I would have NEVER been able to take care of all of this water without them. Mom & Dad, You are the best!!! Thank you for saving me from drowning (literally and figuratively)!!!

Has Lee left you in the water too?!

Noooooooooooooooooooooooo! My story is similar from last week- sump failure. Removing the carpet without power was not fun for my hubby either! So glad that you had help and I hope that you can dry it out. Dehumidifier helps if that isn't obvious. Hugs to you all!

What bad luck you have. Your Mom called & was telling me of their adventures today so I just had to read your blog as she was describing it. I felt like I was right there with you, watching though.....not helping. Wishing you bright, brighter & the brightest sunny days ahead. Thinking of you. Love Aunt G

That is unreal! The only good thing I can think of is that you don't have a finished basement...Less cleaning and no carpet to replace. Just feel bad that this happened when your hubby's out of town. BYW, Lis, how's everything going with your home recovery? I am just praying that we won't get anymore rain! Good luck everyone :-)

Actually, we got incredibly lucky that our install date for our geothermal heating and cooling system has been delayed. Otherwise, this basement would have been well underway to being finished. Chris just did a major demolition and ripped the basement apart to prep for his new man cave (that he will be sharing with 3 girls).

Glad you survived! I remember some of those days. The last one was when I was driving to Milwaukee with Jill and Brad to see George and Chad. We were stuck in Chicago when my awesome friends called and told me it had been raining all day and they had just checked on my basement. It was not good news. They got their wet vac and went to town and ended up installing a new sump pump before I returned home the next day. Glad you had help!!!
