Saturday Morning Cartoons & Cereal...

Most children now have access to cartoons 24 hours a day if they want it. Between the cable channels now dedicated to children shows and On Demand where they can choose from hundreds of episodes...there is no shortage of cartoons.

When I was little though, it was all about Saturday mornings. I would anxiously await for the week to wrap up so I could plop myself down in front of the TV in our family room and watch some of my favorite cartoons.

The cherry on top of Saturday morning cartoons was that I got to eat a bowl filled with sugary, crunchy goodness and milk. Yes, I am talking about cereal...yummy, yummy cereal! I couldn't wait to choose from the boxes of Froot Loops, Lucky Charms, Captain Crunch and Honey Nut Cheerios in our cupboards.

I would carry my bowl cautiously from the kitchen to the coffee table in the family room. Then I would sit down with knees swung to the side because we had a coffee table that had open legs but that had a band of wood that went around all four sides. It didn't make for the most comfortable seating but with the first bite of cereal, none of that mattered. I was taken to another place...

A wonderful place with a mouthful of my favorite cereal and my friends Bugs Bunny, Woody Woodpecker, Tom, Jerry, Smurfette, Papa Smurf, Alvin, Simon, Theodore and all of The Super Friends.

I wanted to know what cereals people liked best when they were kids, so I went to Facebook and Twitter. Here are some of the answers...

This Gal's Journey - By far...Peanut Butter Captain Crunch!!!

Momma Made It Look EasyFruit Loops.

The Harried Mom - I loved cocoa puffs! Chocolate milk left in the bowl after the cereal, total score.

Illusion of Sanity Oooh, I liked Lucky Charms. :)

Cyndi Z. - Captain Crunch!!!

Fractured Family Tales - Quaker Instant Oatmeal Brown Sugar and Cinnamon

I Delight in You - Peanut Butter Captain Crunch

What was your favorite cereal when you were a kid?

I loved Fruit Loops and we always had to watch the Smurfs. My daughter loves watching them on Hulu.

Life cereal. My mom never bought sugar cereal and I am glad I didn't get hooked on it. Usually we had oatmeal or rice so having Life, because it is sweetened, was a treat.

This post makes me feel sorry for my children because they don't eat what I did.

I loved fruit loops, Sugar smacks, and cocoa peebles with the Flintstones. And I would also eat a plate of biscuits sometimes.

I never liked cereal. I know. Even now, the only cereal I will eat is the Cascadian Farms Dark Chocolate Almond Granola. I DID, however like Saturday morning cartoons! I used to get up so early that the farm report was on. I loved Bugs Bunny and the Smurfs.

You just made cereal nostalgic for me! I loved cereal time. Brother and I used to play at the kitchen table and pretend that we were on a cereal box commercial. haha

My favorite? Flinstones Fruity Pebbles was far my favorite choice! Yum :)

I loved Captain Cruch but, we didn't get it often!

We didn't get kid's cereal very often.... Lucky Charms stands out in my mind. Rice Crispies is more likely what we got... I still can hear them popping.
Miss those Saturday cartoons, they were so much better than what we get on Saturday now! (we don't have cable....)

Definitely Lucky Charms for me too. But yes, I also liked Captain Crunch and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. And my Dad would join me with his Frosted Flakes! :D

Oh my, this takes me back....waaaaay back (since I'm as old as dirt). When I was a kid cereals were all still semi-healthy...Wheaties, Cheerios, Raisin Bran, and the dreaded Shredded Wheat (shudder). When my sister came along (12 years later) some of the fun stuff started and I benefited from that too! My all time favorite was Trix! After all "Trix is for Kids!" Silly rabbit!

Oh my... this post takes me back to some very happy times. There is really isn't anything better than the combination of cartoons and cereal to a child, is there?

Loved danger mouse and peanut butter captain crunch (though I'm fairly certain that wasn't a Saturday morning cartoon)!

Thanks so very much for your kind words on my post over at Shell's place. So wonderful to "meet" you :)

My all-time favorite cereal was, oddly enough, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cereal. It was basically rice Chex with marshmallows, but one of the marshmallow colors (I think it was the green turtles) had a hint of a clove flavor. Yum!

My all-time favorite Saturday morning cartoon was Galaxy High, about two Earth kids who went to an intergalactic high school.

I used to get up so early too! So different than the 24/7 cartoons my kids have access to. Lucky Charms was probably my favorite. Though I was so deprived. It was such a rare treat! Hope you had a wonderful weekend beautiful friend!

I am a Lucky Charms kinda girl. I would eat all of the cereal first, leaving just the marshmellows :)

I wasn't much into watching cartoons, and weekends my dad made breakfast, and it sounds strange but I still to this day have to have apple sauce on my pancakes, waffles and french toast. It's something my grandpa started and my dad kept up with it.
